DC Unemployment Rate is the Third-Lowest of the Big Cities

February 5, 2014

The Washington metro’s unemployment rate fell to 4.6 percent in December, the third-lowest unemployment rate among big cities, down from 5.3 percent in November.

Among cities with populations of a million or more, only Minneapolis, at 4.3 percent, and Salt Lake City, at 3.5 percent, had lower unemployment rates in December.

The jobless rate in the District itself also fell sharply in December, to 6.9 percent from 7.2 percent. Baltimore’s unemployment rate was 5.9 percent in December, down from 6.3 percent.

The Labor Department says unemployment rates fell in 339 out of the nation’s 372 metropolitan areas.

Bismarck, N.D., which has held the nation’s lowest unemployment rate for years, now has some competition. Logan, Idaho and Midland, Tex. both tied Bismarck, with unemployment rates of just 2.8 percent in December.
