Supermarket Wave in DC Area

December 1, 2017

We, as humans, love food. And we’re finicky about where we buy it.

Fortunately, for many Greater Washington residents, there is no lack of options. As the Washington Business Journal’s Rebecca Cooper has reported, the region’s dominant players — namely Safeway and Giant — have steadily lost market share in recent years to a slate of new or expanding grocers, both large and small.

And there is more to come. A wave of new grocery stores is planned for the region, from megamarkets like Wegmans to gourmet grocers like Dean & DeLuca. They are moving into new construction or taking over shuttered big-box retailers. Because food sells.
