Three Pachyderms Arrive to National Zoo

May 26, 2014

Three elephants from Calgary arrived at the National Zoo last week. The three Asian elephants are on loan from the Calgary Zoo, having left there on May 20 to make the 60-hour, 2,500-mile trip to D.C. in specially built 10,000-pound travel crates. Swarna and Kamala were born around 1975 in Sri Lanka, while Maharani was born to Kamala in July 1990. Bozie and Shanthi — two of the National Zoo’s four elephants — lived at the same orphanage in Sri Lanka with Kamala and Swarna, but the Zoo says it’s impossible to know if they recognize one another.
