DC Eyes Ice Skating Rink

Fort Dupont Ice Arena, the District’s only indoor rink, was constructed in 1976 as an interim facility to celebrate America’s bicentennial. It is well past its prime. This week, D.C. kicked off a multi-year effort to build a new arena in its place, in what is fast becoming a busy sports complex in Southeast Washington.

The Department of General Services on Tuesday released a solicitation for architectural and engineering services related to the future construction of a two-sheet rink adjacent to the existing Fort Dupont arena, located at 3779 Ely Place SE, in Ward 7.

The project is expected to cost about $20.4 million. The District has budgeted $15.4 million, and the Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena will raise the remaining $5 million. The friends group hired its first director of fundraising last year to lead a capital campaign.
