Lyon Village May Receive New School

June 3, 2014

As you may have already seen, Lyon Village is quite likely to have a new middle school for residents beginning in 2018 or 2019. There are three primary options on the table: M1, M5, and M6. The School Board is considering many view points. On May 27, Arlington Public Schools (APS) released a new proposal (M6) for adding new middle school seats which significantly affects Lyon Village. M6 would house three disconnected programs under one roof at the Wilson site: the H-B Woodlawn program (a 6-12 secondary program focused on student choice: use
of time and personal behavior, educational goals and student governance), and the Stratford program (a secondary school program for students with special needs) and a 600-seat neighborhood middle school, creating a 1,300-seat school. It would also provide for renovations to the Stratford site, but with only 750 seats, so that is unlikely to be an option for Lyon Village.

There are no official boundaries suggested yet, but Lyon Village is squarely within the 1.5 mile walk zone of the Wilson site, so it is a real possibility.
